PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE USE
Meet an Alpaca at the Canal Fun Weekend in Warwick!

The Saltisford Canal Trust is again taking part in the Heritage Open Days weekend in September.

This year we are planning a weekend of free, fun packed, special canal heritage events

on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th September, from 10-00 am to 5 pm , at our canal side gardens in the centre of Warwick.

Inside our craft marquee, over the weekend, will be handmade gifts and a cake stall. Outside will be short boat trips

aboard Saltie 2, a historic steam narrowboat, model boat displays, children's activities, folk music, and a chance to meet

a friendly baby Alpaca or some Pygmy Goats!

Visitors can explore the Saltisford waterside gardens trail, experience our new sensory garden, learn more about the

history of our local canals in our Visitor Centre, and soak up some waterway heritage. In smaller marquees will be a beer

tent, live folk music, children’s activities, tombola, information on the Trust and displays by other local canal societies.

Come and join us this September for a celebration of our wonderful local canal heritage.

Most activities are FREE– some by donation.
The Saltisford Canal Centre is a short walk from Warwick Town Centre; the G1 bus stops outside on the Birmingham

Road. There is very limited car parking, but you may be able to park on adjacent Budbrooke Industrial Estate.

The Saltisford Canal Trust- a registered charity- was set up to restore the canal arm and to promote the use of the canal in

Warwick. It does this by having a day hire boat, waterside gardens open free to the public, provides moorings for both

visitor boats- over 800 in 2012- and long term moored Narrowboats, and provides a wide range of services including a

canal Visitor Centre, laundrette, gift shop, drinking water, electrical hook up, sewage pump-out, rubbish disposal; and

promotes knowledge of the historic significance of the canal on Warwick’s development.

Saltisford Canal Trust

Saltisford Canal Trust

Dear WI Members

The Saltisford Canal Trust (located by the canal bridge next to our offices at Corunna Court) is holding a heritage weekend 14th and 15th September.  They have asked WFWI if they would like to have a cake stall and the Trustees would be very grateful if any members could contribute cakes and preserves.  Cakes would have to be whole ones, on paper plates and wrapped in clear plastic and taken to the canal centre on the day.

I am attaching a description (link above) of the event that I took from their website and I must say, it does sound as if the canal trust is offering a good day out!

If any of you would be willing to make cakes, please contact Veronica Chapman (Home & Leisure Sub-committee) on 01926 403648.

Wimbledon 2014

We have received this invitation from Jan, if anyone is interested in going, please contact her (phone number below). For more information click the link at the bottom.

I was wondering if you or any of your members  were interested in this trip I am helping to sort out. It is for the last weekend of Wimbledon and guarantees a seat on No 1 court all day. As the attached says they play the junior and senior finals on that court during the ladies finals (which you could watch on Henman Hill if you prefer)

My brother went with the company this year and had a fantastic time, the only drawback was the number of pick up spots for the coach which has a major impact on the implimentation of the drivers hours regulations for the coach. For this reason we thought that if we could get enough people interested we could limit the number of pick ups to a couple. I am attaching the letter recieved by my brother re this and it gives a good outline of the weekend. I already have 12 definate and some others thinking about it so Coventry/possibly Warwick dependant on numbers  will probably be the first pick up then going on to pick up my brother etc probably in Northants.. We do not have to get a full coach to run it so it is definately a go-er.

This is not a profit making enterprise and you will see that there are some discounts for group bookings based on the numbers. It is our intention that everyone is aware of these and that we have a share out on the day of any reduction to the bill. This might buy us a glass of Pimms

If you are interested please let me know and send/give me a deposit as soon as possible. (The reference to insurance applies to overseas trips only) . My address is Jan Wade, Dumela, Berkswell Road, Meriden CV7 7LB , telephone number 01676 523118. This trip is not limited to ladies or WI members as some friends and members of my bridge club are also going on the trip.

Perhaps you could let me know in the next couple of weeks if you are interested.

July Meeting

Hello Ladies,
Our next meeting is tomorrow 17th July, at 7.30pm, at Fillongley Village hall. We are having a cheese and wine evening(soft drinks available) with craft demonstrations and opportunities to participate,
so please do come along and join in.
May we remind those of you going on the theatre trip to kindly bring your £20 payment, if at all possible, as we have paid for the tickets in advance. Thank you.
The Book Club met last week and reviewed the latest novel Gone Girl, a top 10 psychological thriller, in which a wife frames her husband for her murder. Our next book is by Kate Morton entitled
The Secret Keeper, a number one best seller. The review meeting is on August 13th, at 8pm at the Manor Pub. All are welcome, we have copies of the book available.
A date and route for the Walking Group will be discussed tomorrow at the meeting, do let us know your suggestions. In view of the unusual heat wave we are enjoying, it may be that an evening walk would be more suitable.
Kind Regards,
Fillongley Lite WI Committee.

Tuesday 18 June 2013

June Meeting

Hello Ladies,
The next Meeting is this Wednesday 19th June at 7.30pm at the Village Hall. Our speaker is Liz Maxwell, who will give a talk on How to get started with Family History. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Last month our speaker Lis Dobb-Sandi gave a fascinating and extremely entertaining talk regarding her life’s adventures. This was combined with the Public Affairs Resolution brief discussion and voting on the Articles of Association and WI Constitution. All votes were carried unanimously and these votes were taken to the AGM on the 1st June, by our Representatives.
It has been a busy time for our WI of late. Our fund raising efforts at the Garden Party of over £200 were equalled by the Committee’s efforts at the Village Fete, serving tea and homemade cake, bringing a grand total of £442 for our Group. Well done to all those involved.
The Walking Group had a lovely time at Shustoke Reservoir last Saturday, it was a sunny day, with lots to see, on and off the water and everyone enjoyed a picnic afterwards. The next walk is Tuesday 25th June at 11am at the car park of the Social Club, Ousterne Lane, Fillongley.
The Book Club met last Thursday to review A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. The next book, , is now available if anyone would like a copy to read(these are loaned library books). This book will be reviewed on 11th July at 8pm at the Manor Pub, Fillongley. Please email/telephone to request a copy.
The Committee have spent some time deliberating trip ideas for the WI this year and we do hope that the choice will meet with your approval. We would like to offer a WI Trip to the Belgrade Theatre to see The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie, on Wednesday 6th November at 7.45pm. The Mousetrap is a murder mystery, the scene is set when a group of people in a country house, cut off by snow, discover to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. To celebrate 60 incredible years on stage in the West End, The Mousetrap is going on tour for the first time, with a star cast. Lifts can be arranged by the Committee. Tickets are £20 each. Please email your ticket requests or speak to us on Wednesday.
Kind Regards,
Fillongley Lite WI Committee.

Craft Petition

Dear WI
Please see below information taken from NFWI News regarding an e-petition that NFWI is urging members to complete:
“Petition on craft and the creative industries
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has proposed that ‘crafts’ should no longer be considered part of the creative industries, as part of proposed changes set out in a Consultation paper Classifying and Measuring the Creative Industries. Large numbers of craft businesses are sole-traders, many of whom fall below the VAT threshold, which makes data collection difficult. Because of the difficulty in capturing an accurate picture of the craft sector, ‘crafts’ has been removed as a category.

Crafts make a significant economic contribution; the Craft Council estimated that the income for craft-making businesses in 2011 was £457m (just less than London’s West End theatres). There is concern that the failure to recognise crafts as a specific category for measurement will result in it being less visible than other creative industries, and will mean that government, craft makers, craft agencies and organisations have no agreed source of data that can depict the scale and importance of the craft sector.

The NFWI is asking members to sign an e-petition urging the Government to reconsider. Please circulate this to members. The petition is open online until 8 August, and can be accessed by following this link,

Book Club

Hello Ladies,

We had an encouraging meeting on Wednesday at the Book Club and looked at various recommended book titles. It was decided it would be best to avoid new titles purely from a cost perspective, the thinking being that we could look at these at a later date. Therefore the chosen book to read is ‘Me before you’ by Jojo Moyes with the review meeting on April 3rd at 8pm at Fillongley Social club.

Having taken WI advice regarding the club, we are pleased to inform you that it works on the same principle as the WI and is open to all ladies, either members or guests. The only cost involved is obtaining the book in whatever format you prefer. The Committee will oversee the Club and keep you all informed. Please feel free to join in.

Click the book to the right to go to the Amazon site to buy or read reviews and to look inside the book.

Kind regards,

Denman in Bloom

Dear Federation Secretaries,
In April and May 2013 we are holding a bulb festival, kindly sponsored by Walkers Bulbs. A host of daffodils, tulips and crocuses will be on display in the grounds of Denman and to celebrate, we have organised a range of flower themed courses, so you can try a new skill AND experience the glories of our gardens at the same time.
We will also be hosting two open afternoons, where you can come and stroll in the Denman gardens and treat yourself to a cream tea. These will be on Sunday 14 April and Sunday 28 April from 1pm-5pm. Admission is £3. Children under 16 can enter for free. Individuals can pay at the gate. If you would like to bring a coach, you must purchase your tickets in advance by calling us on 01865 391 991.
I’d be grateful for anything you can do to spread word about the Denman in Bloom open afternoons and the courses listed above. It would be great if you could add it to your newsletters and link your website to the Denman Forthcoming Events section: http://www.denman.org.uk/forthcoming-events/denman-bulb-festival/19.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you require further information.
Best wishes,
Kate
