Craft Petition

Please see below information taken from NFWI News regarding an e-petition that NFWI is urging members to complete:

“Petition on craft and the creative industries

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has proposed that ‘crafts’ should no longer be considered part of the creative industries, as part of proposed changes set out in a Consultation paper Classifying and Measuring the Creative Industries. Large numbers of craft businesses are sole-traders, many of whom fall below the VAT threshold, which makes data collection difficult. Because of the difficulty in capturing an accurate picture of the craft sector, ‘crafts’ has been removed as a category. 

Crafts make a significant economic contribution; the Craft Council estimated that the income for craft-making businesses in 2011 was £457m (just less than London’s West End theatres). There is concern that the failure to recognise crafts as a specific category for measurement will result in it being less visible than other creative industries, and will mean that government, craft makers, craft agencies and organisations have no agreed source of data that can depict the scale and importance of the craft sector.

The NFWI is asking members to sign an e-petition urging the Government to reconsider. Please circulate this to members. The petition is open online until 8 August, and can be accessed by following this link,

Hello Ladies,

I am delighted to tell you that we raised over £200 at Saturday’s Garden Party. Thank you to those of you who donated cakes and items and also thank you to those of you that came along and supported us during the afternoon. We had visitors from other WI groups and we enjoyed chatting to them and exchanging ideas. Committee members worked hard all day to make the event a success and this was helped by the lovely setting which our guests appreciated.

This Saturday afternoon, 25^th May, at the Village Fete, the Committee are serving tea and cake, so do come along and join in the fun. Any help is welcome and cakes to sell will be gratefully received.

The Book Club is now reading, A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. The review meeting is at the Manor Pub, on Thursday 13^th June, at 8pm. Anyone wanting a copy of the book to read, please contact me asap.

Meeting 15th May

Sorry for the late post, but I thought I'd post it anyway for completeness.

Hello Ladies,

We have our next meeting this Wednesday, 15^th May, at 7.30pm at Fillongley Village Hall. This month is our Resolution Meeting where the Public Affairs Resolution – ‘Decline of our high streets and town centres’ - will be discussed and voted upon.

We are looking forward to our Speaker Lis Dodd-Sandi, who is going to talk to us about her life in Zimbabwe.

Please remember to bring along to the meeting, bunting for the Garden Party(May 18^th 2-5pm) , together with books, bottles, plants, homemade crafts, unwanted gifts, jams and chutneys. All items received so far are much appreciated. Homemade cakes please and anything else, to Ann Rowley’s house, Station House, Tamworth Road, Fillongley CV7 8ED, the venue of the Garden Party on either Friday 17^th or Saturday 18^th morning(tel. 01676 540913). We look forward to seeing you all there on the 18^th.

The Walking Group are continuing to enjoy exploring the countryside and we have two new dates for your diary;

Saturday 8^th June, Shustoke Reservoir, 11am. Please bring a picnic lunch to eat in the picnic area after the walk. This tranquil expanse of water also provides an abundance of wildlife to observe and is an ideal location for a pleasant and relaxing walk.

Tuesday 25^th June, Social Club, Ousterne Lane, Fillongley, 11am. Fillongley Circular Walk. This was to be our original walk that was cancelled due to bad weather, so here’s hoping for a fine day.

Walks are automatically cancelled if it is torrential rain.

The Book Club are next meeting on Thursday, 13^th June at 8pm at The Manor Pub, book choice to be confirmed hopefully at tomorrow’s meeting, we are now arranging to loan books as a group from a library.

April Meeting

Hello Ladies,

We have our next Meeting this Wednesday at 7.30pm at Fillongley Village Hall, with a cookery demonstration and food tasting evening by Richard Evans. Obviously no cakes required this month

but thank you so much for your splendid efforts at the last meeting, we even froze one of the cakes in readiness for the garden party, so much appreciated.

Please be reminded of our Garden Party on Saturday, May 18^th, 2-5pm at Station House, Tamworth Road, Fillongley, CV7 8ED. All are welcome. As you are aware Ann Rowley is kindly offering her premises for the event and she is happy for you to take items such as cakes, preserves and plants to her house on either Friday 17^th May or the morning of the 18^th. With regard to other items of:

books, good quality unwanted gifts, crafts or wine, please do try to bring those along to this week’s meeting. However late arrivals can be taken to Ann’s house nearer the time, please telephone

her on 01676 540913 to make sure that someone is at home to take delivery. Thank you.

Of course help will be needed on the day, from the morning onwards, so please specify as soon as possible if you can spare an hour.

Following a successful meeting of the Book Club, the next book to read is The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey, with a review meeting on Thursday 9^th May at 8pm at the Manor Pub, Fillongley.

The Walking Group completed their first walk last weekend, on what turned out to be a lovely sunny day. They will next meet at the Bull and Butcher Pub, on Saturday 27^th April at 10.30am, for

a 4 mile walk in Corley.

BLOOMING CLOTHES SHOW

27^th April 2013 at Hatton Country World

Ladies – we really need you to come along to make this event a success. The fashion shows are at 11.30 a.m. & 2.30 p.m. and all the models will be WFWI members. Tickets are modestly priced at £5.00 which will include a goody bag, so why not come along and refresh your spring/summer wardrobe?

This event is being entirely sponsored by Hatton Country World so that means that 100% of the ticket price comes into Warwickshire Federation funds.

Tickets are available for purchase by calling Ransons Garden Centre at Hatton Country World on 01926 843555. However, your members will be able to buy tickets on the door but please phone Ransons Garden Centre in advance to check availability.
